Sigh…) It is more important to allocate money for immediate, existing social [b]problems than to spend it on long-term research that might help future [b]generations. [b][b]Is it proper to send man to Mars while a large population suffers [b]illiteracy? [b]Is it humane to fund billions for the research of AIDS while millions of [b]people in Africa starve to death? Immediate existing social problems [b]deserve more attention and money than the long-term research. [b][b]Lots of social problems in our times vibrate foundation of our constitution [b]as well as hamper the promotion of our life quality. Unemployment and [b]illiteracy are such matters ? The hungry ,the laid off workers and those [b]without any fundamental living skills need to survive, in contrast ,neither [b]will our society be stable nor a number of the so-called high-tech [b]investigations will benefit of the population. Imagine a hungry beggar, [b]cold and pallid, wandering along streets in the day and cringing under [b]bridges at night, how could he benefit from any space exploration? If our [b]community is thronged with such people, commercialization and development [b]seem to be impossible. Even worse the solidity of the state would remain a [b]question. On the other hand, if more money are allocated to educate and [b]train the people, helping them adapt to the ever-shifting society and ever- [b]developing technology, they will acquire fundamental skills to catch up [b]with the world and form a more capable working force for a prosperous [b]industry. Therefore, governments should focus on the problems of [b]unemployment and illiteracy. [b][b]Environmental degradation is another exigent problem as serious as [b]unemployment and illiteracy. Green House Effect, caused by the increasing [b]concentration of CO2 in atmosphere, has warmed the earth and generated many [b]climatic changes partly responsible for the extinction of certain species [b]and the decrease of fertile farmlands. Exhaust and waste in large cities [b]have greatly polluted the air and the river, rendering people more [b]susceptible to air-borne and water-borne diseases. Sand storms, [b]signs/traces of erosion of productive soil and desertification, come out [b]every year and sweep the cities with its violent and devastating blows. [b]People can not live in these suffocating situation. Apart from the above [b]three issues mentioned, many other representatives of environmental [b]degradation have been influencing the globe frequently. All of them require [b]urgent treatments and lots of money. [b][b]Emphasis on the immediate social problems, however, does not mean that [b]long-term research providing a brighter future for our descendants needs [b]little consideration. We must, at the same time, care about sustainable [b]development. For example, we must cultivate and hone our children, the [b]master of future; we must spend money on infrastructure such as [b]transportation and energy, which is the base of an industrial country; we [b]must fund for our national defense that is essential and crucial for [b]stability, peace and independence. In a word, we should not neglect long- [b]term research. [b][b]To sum up, both immediate and long-term projects require our money and [b]attention. But I hold that we should allocate more resource on the most [b]urgent problems of the present, which is important and indispensable for [b]the development of our society. [b][b]题目:college students—and people in general—prefer to follow directions [b]rather than make their own decisions. Therefore, colleges should eliminate [b]as many choices as possible in order to offer students clear direction. [b][b]What most people really want to attain is not knowledge, but certainty. [b]Unfortunately, certainty adds little to knowledge. Therefore, colleges [b]shall [b]propel students to search rather than impose directions on them. [b][b]Habitually, what most people want is a comfortable nest. Gaining real [b]knowledge, however, requires taking risks and keeping the mind open, in the [b]mean time, obliges people to learn the complex and often unsettling truth, [b]which might result in a complete collapse of one’s interpretation about [b]the world. Suddenly the long-worshipped ideology ruins and the familiar [b]world takes on a horrible new look. For those comfortably settled in their [b]pigeon holes, this uncertainty arouses uneasiness as well as confusion. [b]Rather than gladly face the unknown world, most prefer to [b]turn their back to it and follow conventional doctrines, because clear [b]direction exonerates them from the painstaking grope for truth. That’s why [b]Athens expelled Socrates and Catholic burned Bruno to death. [b]Unfortunately ,certainty itself promotes no knowledge, [b][b]New knowledge starts with challenge to the old one, for, if without [b]skepticism, people accept all the dominant theories, they would have little [b]inclination to observe new phenomena, not to mention, probe the deep-hidden [b]truth. If Copernicus had not questioned Aristotle, there would not be [b]modern astronomy; if Einstein had not doubted Newton, there would be no [b]contemporary physics. Therefore, in order to advance technology, people [b]learn to doubt, to face uncertainty, and to give their own judgments, [b]however painful it may be. [b][b]Colleges shall help students develop the desire to challenge and the [b]ability to decide. It is in college that people originate a formulative [b]world view, meanwhile, form their own system of thinking. If they have no [b]choice to decide and only need to follow certain guidance, their ability to [b]judge could not be trained and honed; gradually they might yield totally to [b]authorities, losing all the vigor of creativity and originality. [b]Consequently, they may be like automatic machines, only taking and [b]executing orders. Then, not an ingenious thought would glisten in society [b]and knowledge would be like backwaters. [b][b]On the other hand, if a college enjoys a democratic atmosphere, leaving [b]many choices to its students, students may broaden their eye-sight and [b]think more thoroughly; for, before one makes a decision, he shall study [b]information from at least two different prospective. In that case, students [b]are inclined to look at a problem from diverse aspects. As a result, they [b]may come up with meaningful findings, infancy of new knowledge. After [b]weighing in mind all the relevant factors, a student is then required to [b]pin one, on which he bases his following actions. Simply put, the process [b]of decision-making horns a student’s ability to discern the most important [b]factor, to view a broad picture rather than fragments of information, which [b]is crucial and essential for scientific research., because only by grasping [b]the determining factor, can scientists unravel the complex phenomenon and [b]forge through to the core of a matter. Thus, decision-making is [b]indispensable in the course of education. [b][b]In order to forestall the tendency of completely conforming to conventions [b]as well as sparkle a student’s initiality, colleges shall encourage their [b]students to make their own decisions. Otherwise, the world may be thronged [b]with people without innovative thoughts, choking further development in [b]science. 17 [b][b]This argument is relatively sound, however, there are several precarious [b]assumptions: the speed of tickets sold is an adequate indicator of the [b]band’ [b]s popularity; what is successful in Megalopolis is sure to succeed [b]nationwide; advertising will [b]certainly result in good sales of tickets. [b][b]First, the arguer fails to rule out other factors besides popularity that [b]cause the tickets to be sold out fast, such as the renovation of [b]ticket-selling devices and the total number of tickets available. If [b]tickets [b]were sold by ticket sellers and [b]people had to queue to buy, no doubt that it would go out much slower than [b]today when people can reserve and transact on the web, regardless of the [b]band is popularity. If the total number of tickets on sale is bigger, it is [b]more likely that the tickets take more time to sell, especially when the [b]amount exceed those who desire to attend the concert. For example, when [b]there’re 4,000 people eager to listen to their performance, 3,000 tickets [b]is inadequate therefore quickly sold, while 5,000 means a [b]surfeit and may not sell out. Thus, in order to evaluate their popularity, [b]the number of tickets sold and the audience/seats radio should be [b]presented, not the speed of tickets sold be compared. [b][b]Second, the argument builds on the assumption that M and the whole country [b]share some similarities concerning with the band, which, however, I take [b]leave to doubt. What if only people in M are frantic about this band? What [b]if only people in M consider music a necessary part of life? what if only [b]people in M are willing to pay a high price to enjoy a concert? What if [b]only the hall in M has the special equipments required by the band for best [b]performance? There’s no evidence in this argument to [b]guarantee that things in M can be applied nationwide. [b][b]Finally, the arguer gives no support that the sales of tickets is a result [b]from advertising. No fact is presented, no statistic is cited and no [b]comparison is made. As a result, the comments on the effect of advertising [b]remain dubious. [b][b]There’s no reason the band should not hire an ad company to launch a [b]campaign. But before following the recommendation, the band should [b]investigate more about the sales of tickets, their popularity throughout [b]the [b]country and the actual effect of advertising.
