You are certainly welcome to apply to our LL.M. program.  We do occasionally consider applicants who have a score that is below our requirement for a conditional admission.  However, the conditionality does require that the applicant achieve our required score prior to the beginning of the program.  All that being said, we are firm in regards to our TOEFL/IELTS requirement.

We are pleased to hear of your interest in our LL.M. degree program.  We do a holistic review of our applicants, weighing a number of factors for the admission decision.  In prior application cycles, we have accepted applicants who have a 6.5 IETLS score, lower than the announced 7.0 score, as we try to view the overall strength of the candidate and determine if he or she will be successful in their LL.M. endeavor—it partly depends on the breakdown of the components of the English language exam scores.  Therefore, I cannot answer your question as to guaranteed admission, prior to the LL.M. Admissions Committee looking through your admission application packet materials, but we would look forward to reviewing your application and encourage you to submit such.

Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in our program. First of all, congratulations on getting a 6.5 on your IELTS exam. It is a difficult test, and you did well. The minimum IELTS score we accept for admission is 6.5, so you are more than welcome to apply with at 6.5 score.

Because our applicants come from many different countries and many different schools, we do not have a standardized set of requirements that will qualify/disqualify you for applying.  I can tell you that all elements of the application are important.  The admissions committee will consider the reputation of your school, your grades, your TOEFL score, the comments of your recommenders (which should be specific, and reflect their personal knowledge of your skills), and your work/volunteer experience. They will also want your personal statement to explain your previous experiences, and how they relate to your future career goals.I hope this information is helpful to you. Having passed the bar and working as a lawyer for the past three years is very helpful to your application.  Although we like to see an IELTS of 7 or above, we will often admit those with scores below that if they are otherwise strong candidates.We hope you will consider applying to our program.

Thank you for your interest in the LL.M. program at Vanderbilt. We are very pleased that you are considering applying.We do not have a minimum TOEFL score requirement. Most admitted candidates have a score near 100 on the IBT.The admissions committee would prefer that applicants submit TOEFL exam results. However, the committee may consider applicants who submit an IELTS score. Most admitted students have an an overall IELTS score of 7.0 or higher and fairly evenly distributed subscores.Candidates are admitted each year with slightly lower scores. If the score is slightly lower, other factors may be considered. In addition to the TOFEL or IELTS score, the admissions committee considers previous legal experience, areas of interest, academic work, letters of reference, scholarly publications, writing samples, and demonstrated proficiency in the English language.

This means that even if your IELTS score is below our minimum, you will still be considered. Our main goal is to ensure that students we admit are proficient enough in English to succeed in the classroom environment here at Boston University. If we feel your level is too low, we may also recommend one of our programs designed to first improve student’s English before completing an LLM. Admission to these programs are also competitive and you will be considered automatically. You do not need to arrange submission of an additional application.
