2014年3月25日,寄托与美国驻华大使馆EducationUSA合作,联合举办了提供给寄托学子亲历畅谈踊跃提问机会的在线访谈。该访谈活动已圆满结束,问答汇编整理如下:

Q1:I know a lot of people have trouble withpacking before departure.
1) Can you pleaseprovide us with a list of things that you think we must bring to the campus2) And what is yourfavorite part about the orientation
I know it is difficultto pack when going abroad especially for long periods of time. Remember you canbuy basic things like bedding, dishes, study materials, etc. when you arrive inthe US for school. I would make sure you have items that will allow you to feelat home and be able to study to the best of your ability. For example, if youare not familiar with Western food or do not enjoy it, bring some ingredientsfrom home to make your own favorite dishes. You will need to bring convertersfor any electronics because of the different voltage in the United States. Youshould also bring any prescriptions you have including glasses so you can getthem while in the United States. Other than these things you can obtain anyitems you need while you are in the US.
My favorite part ofnew student orientation is probably getting to know the campus with other newstudents. At Penn we have a party in the Penn Museum, which allows us to seesome history while getting to know other students. I think it’s very helpful tohave this orientation to have a chance to make connections with students beforebeginning schoolwork so we have peers to reach out to if we are overwhelmed orhomesick in any way. Good luck!
Q2:I'm a senior high school student inChina, and I have a few questions below.
1)Howcan I improve my oral English in different ways?2)Iwould like to know something about SAT and TOEFL, i.e. how do American studentsprepare for these exams.3)As Idon't have any academic writing experiences in English, will it be a drawbackin applying to college?
1. Thank you for yourinterest. There are many good ways toimprove your language skills, but the most important one is to practice itconstantly and consistently. You may,for example, join a club for English-speaking nationalities (Irish Network ofChina) or attend programs at the Beijing American Center, which are given inEnglish. These types of events will giveyou lots of practice. You can also watchEnglish-language television programs to practice listening.
2. Americans prepare for the standardized testsin many different ways - the best way is the way that works for you! Forexample, some students will take a professional classroom course, while otherswill purchase software and books for individual study. There are many resources available at thewebsites of the respective standardized testing services.
3. Academic writing isan important part of higher education, but the requirements will vary by yourfield of study. Be sure to do yourresearch with the programs to which you are applying. For example, if you are applying to a math orengineering major, the requirements may be different from an English orHumanities major. These will vary byschool, so be sure to check the requirements on your school's website.
Q3:I am fond of literature works, and it isso sweet to find that you like reading. What I am curious about is that haveyou ever experienced "peak experience" in reading, and would you likeshare it with us please?
Yes, in my spare timeI enjoy leisure reading. It's a good way to distract yourself from theun-pleasantries of life. But, it is important to balance leisure activitieswith daily necessary activities such as schoolwork, jobs, etc. I easily getlost in reading and spend hours at a time reading one book, so before I begin anovel I make sure that I have completed any homework, projects, or essays thatneed to be turned in within a couple days. Usually, I save my "bingereadings" for the weekends when I have much more free time.
Q4:What recommendations would you give tothe international students who have trouble adapting to the American cultureand university life? What are the common problems you have discovered thatinternational students have when communicating with their American peers andhow do you think they can be solved?
At my university, manyforeign students were involved only in student groups from their homecountries, rarely engaging with people outside their circle. I would encourage all students, regardless ofwhere they are from, to meet as many people from as many different countries, states, cultures and ethnicities as possible.
I think one of theproblems that many international students have in adapting to American cultureand university life is not finding a group of friends. American university lifeis very group oriented, so you should try to join a club, sports team, ororganization within the university to find other students who share similarinterests with you. The most common problem that I have seen for internationalstudents communicating with American students is that the internationalstudents just don't keep trying to communicate with American students, theystay within their international group. But, don’t be shy when you're atuniversity, leave your comfort zone and go join an activity (like a club orteam) and make friends in your classes. Even if you are worried about yourEnglish try to go talk to other students. The best way to improve your Englishskills is to keep practicing with native speakers.
Q5:What do you think is the most memorableaspect of your college life and what would you recommend to those who are aboutto start their own college life?
Every student has adifferent experience in college, and it depends on their individual situation, interests, and preferences. For me, themost memorable aspect was the lifetime friendships, made possible by meetingpeople who are very different from me. Many of my closest friends became colleagues, co-workers, advisors, andclients over time.
Q6:What are some of the most common wrongideas Chinese students have toward applying for US grad schools?
Q7:I'm an undergraduate who is preparingfor further study abroad. To get more info about universities in addition toofficial info we can get on their website, I wish it's possible to get in touchwith some students who are studying there. Do you have any recommendedapproaches for this?
Hello, thanks for thequestion! Any university will be able to put you in contact with their studentsstudying abroad so that you have a better idea of what life is like. In fact, they probably have an ambassadorial program for those studying abroad or thosewho have studied abroad to share their experiences. I would suggest emailingthe advisor or college contact who is a liason for studying abroad. They willsurely help you get in touch with students who can share experiences. At UPenn, the study abroad website has email addresses of students abroad whom you cancontact. The website can be found here: https://global.upenn.edu/pennabroadUPenn also providesinformation of Penn students who are involved with the admissions offices togive prospective students an idea of what life is like at Penn. Good luck withyour studies!
Q8:How do you know about local Americanstudents preparing for their law school?
Preparing for lawschool in America is a big deal. Most American students take a “pre-law” trackif it’s available at their school. If not, there are many undergraduate clubsor groups for those interested in law school. These groups help studentsunderstand what law school is like and how to prepare for it. American studentswill spend a lot of time (perhaps during winter or summer break) preparing totake the LSAT by taking prep courses or buying preparation textbooks. ManyAmerican students will try to find internships with law firms or try to shadowa law student or lawyer to understand the career and make sure it is somethingthey want to pursue.
Q9:I just came to study in Chicago lastyear. And will be going to apply Northwestern University after high school.
As we knowNorthwestern University is one of the nation’s top universities. But my writingis not good. I know if I won’t do something now to improve writing, my limitedwriting skill will hold me back in my application.
Hello, I'm glad to seeyou have set your sights high! Northwestern is a great school. I think the bestway to improve your writing skills is to write. In America we say that practicemakes perfect, and it is true. I would suggest communicating with your Americanfriends in Chicago a lot in English. You can also find essay prompts andpractice on your own, maybe your friends will review your work and give youpointers! The best way to improve is to do. There are several textbooks oronline programs to help you study for the SAT or similar tests in which youneed to provide a sample of writing and these can be great resources forimprovement. Best of luck!
Q10:I will go to LA this year. What skillsare needed for my new life? Like driving skill? Do I need health insurance ?Cat I get it in LA?
That's really excitingthat you're going out to LA this year! I wish you luck in your new life there.Well, you should make sure that you have a housing option, you need a place tolive and also some sort of financial support. If you're going for school, willyou have a scholarship or will you pay for it from your savings or will someonesupport you? If you are going to work, do you have enough savings to pay fordaily necessities and rent before your first paycheck? These are questions thatyou need to thing about before you head over.
Big cities in the US,definitely LA have bus systems that you can use to get around the town. However, traffic is usually bad on the streets, so these may be delayed some.If you can afford the car (you need car insurance also in the US) then it mightbe an option for you to get around. You will have to take a driving test oncein LA to get a California license. There are different requirements here fordriving than in China. You should check the DMV of California's website to lookup the requirements for foreigners to get a driving license here:http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.html
You need healthinsurance in the U.S. Health care costs in the United States are very high, especially without health insurance. There are many different companies thatoffer health insurance, so you can shop around for a good and relatively cheaphealth insurance. Depending on how longyou will stay here there may be other options rather than finding an Americanhealth insurance, maybe you could use a travel insurance that covers you in theUnited States, if you will not be there very long. Otherwise, you should lookinto American health insurances. You can get it in LA, but if you wait untilyou arrive then you should get health insurance within the first month ofarriving.
Q11:I am going to pursue a Ph.D. this fallin America at Virginia Tech. I have a question. Is it easy to find a job inindustry as a foreign student with Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Finding a job in theUnited States after studying as a foreign student can be challenging - work inthe United States requires a different visa than you will have as astudent. Virginia Tech will have acareer center, which will be able to advise you on which companies may bewilling to sponsor a work visa for you.
Q12:I am a Chinese student who will study inthe U.S. in the coming fall. I am worried if I could adapt the U.S. collegelife well. My oral English skill is not good and I am the person who is notgood at communication and socializing as well. May I have your suggestions onhow could I prepare for adapting the U.S. campus life? Do you know someone fromChina in your university who can immerge him/her into the U.S. college lifevery well? And how did they achieve it?
Living away from homecan be challenging for anyone, whether it is across the province or across theglobe. I went to school 5,000 km from myhometown, not knowing any fellow students. I was able to adapt quickly, and here is how:
1. Bring a fewreminders from home, whether they are some familiar foods, memorabilia fromyour favorite hometown sports team, or pictures of family and friends. These will help you remember who you are andwhere you are coming from.
2. Immerse yourself inthe local culture - you are studying in the United States to receive exposureto a culture and a way of life vastly different from your own, and this is trueof all students studying abroad. Whilealso balancing your studies (particularly homework), join a diverse range ofstudent groups, become involved in community service, foreign cultural events, and campus sports. You are guaranteed tochallenge your own perceptions, and those of your peers.
As for communication,I would suggest you not be afraid - many English-speakers do not realize theyspeak too quickly or are unclear in their speaking. With exposure to those who do not speakEnglish as a first language, these students will improve their speaking whileyou improve your listening. Win-win! Theimportant part is to not allow yourself to be intimidated. Americans do not believe in the"face" culture, and will not think less of you if you make amistake. They will likely encourage youto ask them to repeat themselves or explain what they are saying.
Adapting to college ishard enough without the factor of being an international student speaking asecond or third language. Remember it always takes time to adapt to any newsituation. I have several friends at UPenn who come from China, and I went tohigh school in Maine with several Chinese students who are now at otheruniversities in the United States. Most of them felt that it took time to adaptbut they were able to do so by making friends with American students and askingfor help when they needed it. They all stress the importance of being true tothemselves to achieve social goals and working hard to achieve their academicgoals. It’s important to be proactive and ask questions when you have theminstead of waiting for help to come to you. The best way to improve oral skillsis to talk to people! Be patient with yourself and you will certainly improve. This is always difficult for me but I find when I ask questions or reach out toother people they respond in kind. It always takes more than one try to getsomething right. Don't be discouraged by a bad experience. I have learned a lotfrom the different experiences I’ve had that have allowed me to be moresuccessful in life. Good luck!

Q14:I'd like to know what the biggestchallenge is for you to study at William & Mary College, one the mostprestigious U.S. Liberal Arts Colleges. And how did you conquer the challenge?
William & Mary isa difficult school, the students are very competitive to get the best grades, and there is a lot of pressure on students to be the best students in theclasses. There are many challenges that the students face like a heavyworkload, very detailed tests, lots of essays, etc. But the biggest strugglefor me is time management. I usually get my work done on time, but I sometimeswait too long to start my work and feel a lot of stress to finish a project. Toovercome this challenge I try to set up a timeline to work on certain projector essay that is coming due. If an essay is due on a Friday, then I make a goalto have half of it done by the Wednesday before.
But, if you everstruggle with any assignment the best thing to do is to ask your professor forhelp. All the professors that I have had, have been very willing to help mebetter understand a lesson, or point me in the right direction for research ona topic.
Q15:What student organizations/communityactivities that Mr. Duran has participated and Joanna and Megan areparticipating now? What abilities that those out-of-classroom activities helpyou strengthen? How do you benefit from them?
I was involved in manyorganizations - campus journalism, student government, and communityservice. Each of these strengthened mycollege experience in different ways, and these vary by each individual. All of these activities strengthened myinterpersonal skills, and helped me to communicate both orally and inwriting. One does not need to benefitmaterially from student activities, but can simply find the joy of sharing withothers a hobby or interest. Most U.S.colleges and universities have hundreds of student groups, focusing on everyarea imaginable. I would encourage youto check the website of your prospective schools under "StudentLife"to find out more.
I am involved in acouple organizations outside of the classroom and I find that they add a lot tomy college experience. First, I am involved in my religious group, which allowsme to discuss my beliefs and provides a social network that I can rely on forany of my needs whether they are physical, emotional or spiritual. This networkgives me confidence to stand up for what I believe in and be apart from thetypical American college culture. Second, my work-study job allows me to tutorelementary school students in West Philadelphia. This job helps me think aboutothers and forget about my own studies and other worries for a few hours everyweek. I feel good about giving to others and my eyes are opened to experiencesoutside of my own college life. Third, I am in a dance group. This is anothersocial network that is almost like a second family to me. We rehearse a lotwhich is a great way for me to exercise and have a creative outlet. All threeof these groups have given me opportunities for leadership in which I havelearned a great deal. If you get involved in out-of-classroom groups, which Iencourage, you should try to take on leadership roles. They will help yourresume and they will help you develop skills you will need in life.
I am involved in acouple different organizations: I am a member of a sorority; I volunteer asconversation partner for incoming international students to practice theirEnglish; I often am a peer-adviser for incoming freshmen; and I sometimesparticipate in a club to learn salsa dancing. I feel that I have gainedleadership experience from my sorority, and all my activities have helped medevelop more friendships with other students that I would not have otherwisehad the opportunity to get to know them. From the organizations I have foundstudy groups, best friends, and traveling companions.
Q16:Could Mr. Duran, Joanna and Meganintroduce respectively about the classroom culture in your university?
American schools arevery different from the Chinese style of instruction. In my experience, the most challenging stylefor most Chinese students is called the Socratic method, where the professorcalls on students individually and without warning to explain a particulartopic. If you are not familiar with thismethod of lecture, I would suggest researching it a bit. Moreover, rotememorization is rarely sufficient in American classrooms; rather, students areexpected to apply the basic lessons and use critical thinking to solve uniqueproblems. This can be particularlychallenging in courses in the humanities, science and engineering.Critical thinking canalso be a challenge for many traditional Chinese students - there is no one, perfect answer, rather there is a problem which may require new or innovativethinking, or include a solution never seen before.
There are differenttypes of classes in the United States, and even within my home university thereare different size classes that change the culture of the classroom. There arebig lecture classes that do not have many question and answer opportunities, but mostly consist of reading the text books and taking notes on thepowerpoints. But, once you get into more specialized courses the classes aresmaller, and the professors will ask each student their opinions andunderstandings of the course materials. You will be expected to share yourpersonal thoughts on the readings for class or the homework assigned. Usuallystudents are pretty competitive on tests and essays to have the best grades, sothey are very diligent in note taking and participating in class discussion.
Hi there! I willgladly introduce the classroom culture at UPenn. As it is a very prestigiousschool, students are here to work hard and are used to a rigorous academiclife. Many are quite opinionated and verbal in the classroom, which opens upgreat doors for discussion in smaller seminar type classes. In introductorylectures most students will take notes on a laptop or other electronic deviceand will email or do other things during the class as well. UPenn students liketo be very busy and involved in many different things and this is apparent inthe classroom as well. As you progress within your major you will be in smallerclasses where students will be more focused and attentive during the class. Many students will want to get to know the professor to establish arelationship with them so they will attend the professor’s office hours to askquestions about the class material or about careers. Penn students are veryhard working and can be competitive in terms of grades, but it is not a hostileenvironment. You will also find some students who are complacent with lowgrades and who do not put as much effort into their studies. I would suggestbefriending the hard-working and high-achieving students wherever you go toschool so that you will be surrounded by good influences and are not discouragedfrom spending time studying.

Q18:I am going to further my graduate studythis fall in landscape architecture. And there are two schools of admissoin Iwanna to choose from, Clemson and University of Georgia. I am puzzled aboutchoosing schools.
1) What do you thinkof atteding a college where there are too many chinese students enrolled? Willit narrow the social circle particular for us chinses students?2) Is it easy to finda job in Georgia State as a foreign student with master degree in landscapearchitecture?(Similar to a question a student had asked)
Great question, and itwill have to be my last, as we are wrapping up here.1) I do not know thatit will make a difference whether a school has a high or low percentage ofChinese students enrolled. Your socialcircle is entirely dependent on you - if you want to only interact with other Chinesestudents, then your circle will be dependent on the number there. You are only limited by your imagination andability to challenge yourself.
2) As previouslymentioned, finding employment in the United States as a foreign student can bevery challenging. I would recommendtalking to the school's career center.
Thanks to everyone foryour great questions, and good luck in all of your pursuits!
