The methods that a community devises to perpetuate itself come into being to preserve aspects of the cultural legacy that that community perceives as essential.[b]翻译:一个社会设计出来保存自己的方法得以形成来保持那个社会认为最重要的一些方面。 分析:主语:The methods; 谓语:com into being;不定式to引导表示目的状语。 Moreover, I can feel strong emotions in response to objects of art that are interpretations, rather than representations, of reality.(LSAT)[b]读法:初级:跳过插入语 高级:直接读[b]查查能力:大脑容量+抗干扰能力[b][b]第三类:倒装:由于应该放在句首的成分太长,因此倒装到句末。 That sex ratio will be favored which maximizes the number of descendants an individual will have and hence the number of gene copies transmitted.[b]读法:需要经过训练后才能按正常语序读。 That sex ratio which maximizes the number of descendants that and individual will have and hence the sex retion which maximize the number of gene copies transmitted will be favered.[b]高级读法:直接读,见后:[b]考查能力:大脑的排序能力
如上例原句中的省略,在第二个the number of 前省略了"sex ration which maximizes"。
That sex ratio will be[b]favored which maximizes the number of[b] descendants an individual will have and[b] hence the number of gene copies[b] transmitted.[b]那种性别比例能在最大程度上增加一个个体所能拥有的后代数量,并因此能在最大程度上增加所传递到后代身上去的基因复制品的数量。
Hardy's weakness derived from his[b] apparent inability to control the[b](55) comings and goings of these divergent[b] impulses and from his unwillingness to[b] cultivate and sustain the energetic and[b] risky ones.[b]哈代的缺陷一方面缘起于他的某种明显的无能,无法控制好那结不尽相同的创作冲动的穿梭往来;另一方面缘起于他不愿意去培养和维持那些富于生机活力和风险性强的创作冲动。
Virginia Woolf's provocative[b] statement about her intentions in[b](5) writing Mrs. Dalloway has regularly been[b] ignored by the critics, since it[b] highlights an aspect of her literary[b] interests very different from the[b] traditional picture of the "poetic"[b](10) novelist concerned with examining states[b] of reverie and vision and with following[b] the intricate pathways of individual[b] consciousness.[b]弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫(Virginia Woolf)在创作《黛洛维夫人》(Mrs. Dalloway)时有关其创作意图的这番发人深思的陈述,迄今为止一贯为文学评论家们所忽略,因为它突出反映了她诸多文学兴趣中某一方面,而这一方面则与人们对“诗性”小说家(poetic novelist)所形成的传统见解大相径庭。
Although Gutman admits[b] that forced separation by sale was[b] frequent, he shows that the slaves'[b](30) preference, revealed most clearly on[b] plantations where sale was infrequent,[b] was very much for stable monogamy.[b]虽然古特曼承认,由于奴隶买卖而造成的被迫离散甚为频繁,但他还是证明,奴隶的偏爱——在那些奴隶买卖并不频繁的种植园上被最为显著地揭示出来——在很大程度上侧重于稳定的一夫一妻制(monogamy)。
Gutman argues convincingly that the[b] stability of the Black family encouraged[b] the transmission of-and so was crucial[b] in sustaining-the Black heritage of[b] folklore, music, and religious[b](45) expression from one generation to[b] another, a heritage that slaves were[b] continually fashioning out of their[b] African and American experiences.[b]古特曼人令人信服地论辨道,黑人家庭的稳定有助于包括民间传说、音乐、及宗教表达在内的黑人文化遗产一代一代传递下去,因而在维持文化遗产方面也起着至关重要的作用,而对于这种文化遗产,黑奴们不断地从其非洲和美洲的经历中予以丰富发展。
This preference for exogamy,[b] Gutman suggests, may have derived from[b] West African rules governing marriage,[b] which, though they differed from one[b] tribal group to another, all involved[b](60) some kind of prohibition against unions[b] with close kin.[b]古特曼表示,这种对于外部通婚的偏爱很有可能缘起于西部非洲制约着婚姻的规定,尽管这些规定在一个和另一个部落群体之间不尽相同,但都涉及到某种对近亲联姻(union with close kin)的禁止。
His thesis works[b] relatively well when applied to[b] discrimination against Blacks in the[b] United States, but his definition of[b](10) racial prejudice as "racially-based[b] negative prejudgments against a group[b] generally accepted as a race in any[b] given region of ethnic competition," can[b] be interpreted as also including[b](15) hostility toward such ethnic groups as[b] the Chinese in California and the Jews[b] in medieval Europe.[b]该社会学家的命题当被应用于针对美国黑人的歧视时,相对而言尚能适用,但他对种族偏见所下的定义——即“以种族为基础的、针对某个群体的消级的先入之见,而该群体在任何特定的种族竞争地区则被普遍认作一种族”——可被理解成同样也襄括了针对加利福尼亚州的中国人以及中世纪的犹太人这样一些种族群体的敌视态度。
Such variations in size, shape,[b](5) chemistry, conduction speed, excitation[b] threshold, and the like as had been[b] demonstrated in nerve cells remained[b] negligible in significance for any[b] possible correlation with the manifold[b](10) dimensions of mental experience.
??[b]Although[b] qualitative variance among nerve[b] energies was never rigidly disproved,[b](30) the doctrine was generally abandoned[b] in favor of the opposing view, namely,[b] that nerve impulses are essentially[b] homogeneous in quality and are[b] transmitted as "common currency"[b](35) throughout the nervous system.
Other experiments revealed slight[b] variations in the size, number,[b] arrangement, and interconnection of the[b] nerve cells, but as far as psychoneural[b](55) correlations were concerned, the obvious[b] similarities of these sensory fields to each[b] other seemed much more remarkable[b] than any of the minute differences.
Although some experiments show that, as[b] an object becomes familiar, its internal[b] representation becomes more holistic and[b] the recognition process correspondingly[b](25) more parallel, the weight of evidence[b] seems to support the serial hypothesis,[b] at least for objects that are not[b] notably simple and familiar.
In large part as a consequence of[b] the feminist movement, historians have[b] focused a great deal of attention in[b] recent years on determining more[b](5) accurately the status of women in[b] various periods.
Thus, for[b] instance, it may come as a shock to[b] mathematicians to learn that the[b] Schrodinger equation for the hydrogen[b](30) atom is not a literally correct[b] description of this atom, but only[b] an approximation to a somewhat more[b] correct equation taking account of[b] spin, magnetic dipole, and relativistic[b](35) effects; and that this corrected[b] equation is itself only an imperfect[b] approximation to an infinite set of[b] quantum field-theoretical equations.
The physicist rightly dreads precise[b] argument, since an argument that is[b] convincing only if it is precise loses[b](75) all its force if the assumptions on[b] which it is based are slightly changed,[b]whereas an argument that is convincing[b] though imprecise may well be stable[b] under small perturbations of its[b](80) underlying assumptions.
However, as they[b] gained cohesion, the Bluestockings came[b](50) to regard themselves as a women's group[b] and to possess a sense of female[b] solidarity lacking in the salonnieres,[b] who remained isolated from one another[b] by the primacy each held in her own[b](55) salon.
As my own studies have[b] advanced, I have been increasingly[b] impressed with the functional[b] similarities between insect and[b](10) vertebrate societies and less so with[b] the structural differences that seem,[b] at first glance, to constitute such an[b] immense gulf between them.
Although fiction assuredly springs from[b](15) political circumstances, its authors react[b] to those circumstances in ways other than[b] ideological, and talking about novels[b] and stories primarily as instruments of[b] ideology circumvents much of the fictional[b](20) enterprise.
Is[b] this a defect, or are the authors working[b] out of, or trying to forge, a different[b](60) kind of aesthetic?
Black Fiction surveys a wide variety of[b] novels, bringing to our attention in the[b] process some fascinating and[b](75) little-known works like James Weldon[b] Johnson's Autobiography of an Ex-[b] Colored Man.
Although these molecules[b](5) allow radiation at visible wavelengths,[b] where most of the energy of sunlight is[b] concentrated, to pass through, they[b] absorb some of the longer-wavelength,[b] infrared emissions radiated from the[b](10) Earth's surface, radiation that would[b] otherwise be transmitted back into[b] space.
The role those anthropologists[b](5) ascribe to evolution is not of dictating[b] the details of human behavior but one[b] of imposing constraints—ways of[b] feeling, thinking, and acting that[b] "come naturally" in archetypal situations[b](10) in any culture.
A low[b] number of algal cells in the presence[b](10) of a high number of grazers suggested,[b] but did not prove, that the grazers[b] had removed most of the algae.
Studies by Hargrave and[b] Geen estimated natural community graz-[b] ing rates by measuring feeding rates of[b] individual zooplankton species in the[b] laboratory and then computing community[b](55) grazing rates for field conditions[b] using the known population density[b] of grazers.
In the periods[b] of peak zooplankton abundance, that is,[b] in the late spring and in the summer,[b] Haney recorded maximum daily com-[b](70) munity grazing rates, for nutrient-poor[b] lakes and bog lakes, respectively,[b] of 6.6 percent and 114 percent of daily[b] phytoplankton production.
The[b] hydrologic cycle, a major topic in this[b] science, is the complete cycle of[b] phenomena through which water passes,[b] beginning as atmospheric water vapor,[b](10) passing into liquid and solid form as[b] precipitation, thence along and into[b] the ground surface, and finally again[b] returning to the form of atmospheric[b] water vapor by means of evaporation and[b](15) transpiration.
Only when a system possesses natural[b] or artificial boundaries that associate[b] the water within it with the hydrologic[b] cycle may the entire system properly be[b](30) termed hydrogeologic.
The historian Frederick J. Turner[b] wrote in the 1890's that the agrarian[b] discontent that had been developing[b] steadily in the United States since[b](5) about 1870 had been precipitated by the[b] closing of the internal frontier--that[b] is, the depletion of available new land[b] needed for further expansion of the[b] American farming system.
In the early 1950's, historians who[b] studied preindustrial Europe (which we[b] may define here as Europe in the period[b] from roughly 1300 to 1800) began, for[b](5) the first time in large numbers, to[b] investigate more of the preindustrial[b] European population than the 2 or 3[b] percent who comprised the political[b] and social elite: the kings, generals,[b](10) judges, nobles, bishops, and local[b] magnates who had hitherto usually[b] filled history books.
Historians such as Le Roy Ladurie[b] have used the documents to extract case[b] histories, which have illuminated the[b] attitudes of different social groups[b](40) (these attitudes include, but are not[b] confined to, attitudes toward crime and[b] the law) and have revealed how the[b] authorities administered justice.
My point is that its central[b] consciousness—its profound[b](20) understanding of class and gender[b] as shaping influences on people's[b] lives—owes much to that earlier[b] literary heritage, a heritage that,[b] in general, has not been sufficiently[b](25) valued by most contemporary literary[b] critics.
But achieving[b] necessary matches in physical properties[b] across interfaces between living and[b] nonliving matter requires knowledge of[b](20) which molecules control the bonding of[b] cells to each other—an area that we[b] have not yet explored thoroughly.
Islamic law is a phenomenon so[b] different from all other forms of[b](5) law—notwithstanding, of course, a[b] considerable and inevitable number of[b] coincidences with one or the other[b] of them as far as subject matter and[b] positive enactments are concerned—that[b](10) its study is indispensable in order to[b] appreciate adequately the full range of[b] possible legal phenomena.
Though[b](20) historically there is a discernible[b] break between Jewish law of the[b] sovereign state of ancient Israel and[b] of the Diaspora (the dispersion of Jewish[b] people after the conquest of Israel),[b](25) the spirit of the legal matter in later[b] parts of the Old Testament is very close[b] to that of the Talmud, one of the[b] primary codifications of Jewish law in[b] the Diaspora.
Islam, on the other hand,[b](30) represented a radical breakaway from the[b] Arab paganism that preceded it; Islamic[b] law is the result of an examination[b] from a religious angle, of legal subject[b] matter that was far from uniform,[b](35) comprising as it did the various[b] components of the laws of pre-Islamic[b] Arabia and numerous legal elements[b] taken over from the non-Arab peoples[b] of the conquered territories.
One such novel idea is[b] that of inserting into the chromosomes[b](25) of plants discrete genes that are not[b] a part of the plants' natural constitution:[b] specifically, the idea of inserting into[b] nonleguminous plants the genes, if they[b] can be identified and isolated, that fit[b](30) the leguminous plants to be hosts for[b] nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Hence, the[b] intensified research on legumes.
It is[b] one of nature's great ironies that the[b] availability of nitrogen in the soil[b](40) frequently sets an upper limit on plant[b] growth even though the plants' leaves[b] are bathed in a sea of nitrogen gas.
Unless they succeed, the[b] yield gains of the Green Revolution will[b](70) be largely lost even if the genes in[b] legumes that equip those plants to enter[b] into a symbiosis with nitrogen fixers[b] are identified and isolated, and even if[b] the transfer of those gene complexes,[b](75) once they are found, becomes possible.
Its subject[b] (to use Maynard Mack's categories) is[b] "life-as-spectacle," for readers,[b] diverted by its various incidents,[b] observe its hero Odysseus primarily[b](10) from without; the tragic Iliad, however,[b] presents "life-as-experience": readers[b] are asked to identify with the mind of[b] Achilles, whose motivations render him[b] a not particularly likable hero.
Most striking among the[b] many asymmetries evident in an adult[b] flatfish is eye placement: before[b] maturity one eye migrates, so that in[b](10) an adult flatfish both eyes are on the[b] same side of the head.
The best[b] evidence for the layered-mantle thesis[b] is the well-established fact that[b] volcanic rocks found on oceanic islands,[b] islands believed to result from mantle[b](10) plumes arising from the lower mantle,[b] are composed of material fundamentally[b] different from that of the midocean[b] ridge system, whose source, most[b] geologists contend, is the upper mantle.
Some geologists, however, on the basis[b] of observations concerning mantle[b] xenoliths, argue that the mantle is[b] not layered, but that heterogeneity is[b] created by fluids rich in "incompatible[b](20) elements" (elements tending toward[b] liquid rather than solid state)[b] percolating upward and transforming[b] portions of the upper mantle[b] irregularly, according to the vagaries[b](25) of the fluids' pathways.
The[b](50) very richness and complexity of the[b] meaningful relationships that kept[b] presenting and rearranging themselves[b] on all levels, from abstract intelligence[b] to profound dreamy feelings, made it[b](55) difficult for Proust to set them out[b] coherently.
t is possible to make[b](40) specific complementary DNA's (cDNA's)[b] that can serve as molecular probes to[b] seek out the messenger RNA's (mRNA's)[b] of the peptide hormones. If brain cells[b] are making the hormones, the cells will[b](45) contain these Mrna'S. If the products[b] the brain cells make resemble the[b] hormones but are not identical to them,[b] then the cDNA's should still bind to[b] these mRNA's, but should not bind as[b](50) tightly as they would to mRNA's for the[b] true hormones.
The molecular approach to detecting[b] peptide hormones using cDNA probes[b] should also be much faster than the[b](60) immunological method because it can[b] take years of tedious purifications[b] to isolate peptide hormones and then[b] develop antiserums to them.
This succession was[b](50) based primarily on a series of deposits[b] and events not directly related to[b] glacial and interglacial periods, rather[b] than on the more usual modern method[b] of studying biological remains found[b](55) in interglacial beds themselves[b] interstratified within glacial deposits.
There have[b](5) been attempts to explain these taboos[b] in terms of inappropriate social[b] relationships either between those[b] who are involved and those who are[b] not simultaneously involved in the[b](10) satisfaction of a bodily need, or[b] between those already satiated and[b] those who appear to be shamelessly[b] gorging.
Many critics of Family Bronte's[b] novel Wuthering Heights see its second[b] part as a counterpoint that comments on,[b] if it does not reverse, the first part,[b](5) where a "romantic" reading receives more[b] confirmation.
Granted that the presence[b] of these elements need not argue an[b] authorial awareness of novelistic[b] construction comparable to that of[b] Henry James, their presence does[b](15) encourage attempts to unify the novel's[b] heterogeneous parts.
This[b](20) is not because such an interpretation[b] necessarily stiffens into a thesis[b] (although rigidity in any interpretation[b] of this or of any novel is always a[b] danger), but because Wuthering Heights[b](25) has recalcitrant elements of undeniable[b] power that, ultimately, resist[b] inclusion in an all-encompassing[b] interpretation.
The isotopic composition of[b](65) lead often varies from one source of[b] common copper ore to another, with[b] variations exceeding the measurement[b] error; and preliminary studies indicate[b] virtually uniform is topic composition[b](70) of the lead from a single copper-ore[b] source.
More[b] probable is bird transport, either[b] externally, by accidental attachment of[b](20) the seeds to feathers, or internally, by[b] the swallowing of fruit and subsequent[b] excretion of the seeds.
It is[b] not known how rare this resemblance is,[b] or whether it is most often seen in[b] inclusions of silicates such as garnet,[b](25) whose crystallography is generally[b] somewhat similar to that of diamond;[b] but when present, the resemblance is[b] regarded as compelling evidence that[b] the diamonds and inclusions are truly[b](30) cogenetic.
[b]Even the "radical" critiques[b] of this mainstream research model,[b] such as the critique developed in[b] Divided Society, attach the issue of[b](30) ethnic assimilation too mechanically[b] to factors of economic and social[b] mobility and are thus unable to[b] illuminate the cultural subordination[b] of Puerto Ricans as a colonial minority.
They are called[b] virtual particles in order to[b](20) distinguish them from real particles,[b] whose lifetimes are not constrained[b] in the same way, and which can be[b] detected.
Other theorists propose that the Moon[b](15) was ripped out of the Earth's rocky[b] mantle by the Earth's collision with[b] another large celestial body after[b] much of the Earth's iron fell to its[b] core.
Thus, what in[b] contrast to the Puritan colonies[b] appears to Davis to be peculiarly[b] Southern— acquisitiveness, a strong[b](70) interest in politics and the law, and[b] a tendency to cultivate metropolitan[b] cultural models— was not only more[b] typically English than the cultural[b] patterns exhibited by Puritan[b](75) Massachusetts and Connecticut, but[b] also almost certainly characteristic[b] of most other early modern British[b] colonies from Barbados north to Rhode[b] Island and New Hampshire.
A[b] very specialized feeding adaptation[b] in zooplankton is that of the[b] tadpolelike appendicularian who lives[b] in a walnut-sized (or smaller) balloon[b](10) of mucus equipped with filters that[b] capture and concentrate phytoplankton.
These[b] historians, however, have analyzed[b](10) less fully the development of[b] specifically feminist ideas and[b] activities during the same period.
When the core of[b] a giant star whose mass surpasses 1.4[b](5) times the present mass of our Sun (M⊙)[b] exhausts its nuclear fuel, it is[b] unable to support its own weight and[b] collapses into a tiny neutron star.
This is so[b] even though the armed forces operate[b] in an ethos of institutional change[b] oriented toward occupational equality[b] and under the federal sanction of[b](15) equal pay for equal
Not only[b] are liver transplants never rejected,[b] but they even induce a state of[b](20) donor-specific unresponsiveness in[b] which subsequent transplants of other[b] organs, such as skin, from that[b] donor are accepted permanently.
While the new[b] doctrine seems almost certainly[b] correct, the one papyrus fragment[b] raises the specter that another may be[b](70) unearthed, showing, for instance, that[b] it was a posthumous production of the[b] Danaid tetralogy which bested[b] Sophocles, and throwing the date once[b] more into utter confusion.
The methods that a community[b] devises to perpetuate itself come into[b](20) being to preserve aspects of the[b] cultural legacy that that community[b] perceives as essential.
Because the potential[b](10) hazards pollen grains are subject to as[b] they are transported over long distances[b] are enormous, windpollinated plants have,[b] in the view above, compensated for the[b] ensuing loss of pollen through[b](15) happenstance by virtue of producing an[b] amount of pollen that is one to three[b] orders of magnitude greater than the[b] amount produced by species pollinated[b] by insects.
For example, the spiral arrangement of[b] scale-bract complexes on ovule-bearing[b] pine cones, where the female reproductive[b](65) organs of conifers are located, is[b] important to the production of airflow[b] patterns that spiral over the cone's[b] surfaces, thereby passing airborne pollen[b] from one scale to the next.
It was not the[b] change in office technology, but rather[b] the separation of secretarial work,[b] previously seen as an apprenticeship for[b](45) beginning managers, from administrative[b] work that in the 1880's created a new[b] class of "dead-end" jobs, thenceforth[b] considered "women's work."
The increase[b] in the numbers of married women emp-[b](50) loyed outside the home in the twentieth[b] century had less to do with the[b] mechanization of housework and an[b] increase in leisure time for these women[b] than it did with their own economic[b](55) necessity and with high marriage rates[b] that shrank the available pool of single[b] women workers, previously, in many[b] cases, the only women employers would[b] hire.
In order to understand the nature of[b] the ecologist's investigation, we may[b] think of the density-dependent effects[b] on growth parameters as the "signal"[b] ecologists are trying to isolate and[b](65) interpret, one that tends to make the[b] population increase from relatively low[b] values or decrease from relatively high[b] ones, while the density-independent[b] effects act to produce "noise" in the[b](70) population dynamics.
But the play's complex view of Black[b] self-esteem and human solidarity as[b] compatible is no more "contradictory"[b](25) than Du Bois' famous, well-considered[b] ideal of ethnic self-awareness[b] coexisting with human unity, or Fanon's[b] emphasis on an ideal internationalism[b] that also accommodates national[b](30) identities and roles.
In which of the following does the authorof the passage reinforce his criticismof responses such as Isaacs' to Raisinin the Sun?[b]题干圈套
Inheritors of some of the[b] viewpoints of early twentieth-century[b] Progressive historians such as Beard and[b] Becker, these recent historians have put[b] forward arguments that deserve[b](10) evaluation.
Despite these vague categories, one[b] should not claim unequivocally that[b](55) hostility between recognizable classes[b] cannot be legitimately observed.
Yet those who stress the achievement of[b] a general consensus among the colonists[b] cannot fully understand that consensus[b] without understanding the conflicts that[b] had to be overcome or repressed in order[b](85) to reach it.
It can be inferred from the passage that the[b]author would be most likely to agree with[b]which of the following statements regarding[b]socioeconomic class and support for the[b]rebel and Loyalist causes during the[b]American Revolutionary War?[b]插入语多
Although it[b] has been possible to infer from the[b] goods and services actually produced[b](20) what manufactures and servicing trades[b] thought their customers wanted, only a[b] study of relevant personal documents[b] written by actual consumers will provide[b] a precise picture of who wanted what.
Such philosoph-[b] ical concerns as the mind-body problem[b] or, more generally, the nature of[b] human knowledge they believe, are basic[b](10) human questions whose tentative[b] philosophical solutions have served as[b] the necessary foundations on which all[b] other intellectual speculation has[b] rested.
The idea of an[b] autonomous discipline called[b](20) "philosophy," distinct from and sitting[b] in judgment on such pursuits as theology[b] and science turns out, on close[b] examination, to be of quite recent[b] origin.
But the recent[b] discovery of detailed similarities in[b] the skeletal structure of the flippers[b] in all three groups undermines the[b](10) attempt to explain away superficial[b] resemblance as due to convergent[b] evolution-the independent development[b] of similarities between unrelated groups[b] in response to similar environmental[b](15) pressures.
Human[b] genes contain too little information even[b] to specify which hemisphere of the brain[b] each of a human's 10'' neurons should[b] occupy, let alone the hundreds of[b](10) connections that each neuron makes.
These questions are political in the[b] sense that the debate over them will[b] inevitably be less an exploration of[b] abstract matters in a spirit of[b](50) disinterested inquiry than an academic[b] power struggle in which the careers and[b] professional fortunes of many women[b] scholars-only now entering the academic[b] profession in substantial numbers-will[b](55) be at stake, and with them the chances[b] for a distinctive contribution to[b] humanistic understanding, a contribution[b] that might be an important influence[b] against sexism in our society.
In experiments,an injection[b] of cytoplasm from dextral eggs[b] changes the pattern of sinistral eggs,[b] but an injection from sinistral eggs[b](80) does not influence dextral eggs.
Recently some scientists have[b] concluded that meteorites found on Earth[b] and long believed to have a Martian[b] origin might actually have been blasted[b](5) free of Mars's gravity by the impact on[b] Mars of other meteorites.
Under the force of this view,[b] it was perhaps inevitable that the art[b] of rhetoric should pass from the status[b] of being regarded as of questionable[b](10) worth (because although it might be both[b] a source of pleasure and a means to urge[b] people to right action, it might also be[b] a means to distort truth and a source of[b] misguided action) to the status of being[b](15) wholly condemned.
None of these[b](15) translations to screen and stage,[b] however, dramatize the anarchy at the[b] conclusion of A Connecticut Yankee,[b] which ends with the violent overthrow[b] of Morgan's three-year-old progressive[b](20) order and his return to the nineteenth[b] century, where he apparently commits[b] suicide after being labeled a lunatic[b] for his incoherent babblings about[b] drawbridges and battlements.
Calculations of the density of alloys[b] based on Bernal-type models of the[b] alloys metal component agreed fairly[b] well with the experimentally determined[b] values from measurements on alloys[b](55) consisting of a noble metal together[b] with a metalloid, such as alloys of[b] palladium and silicon, or alloys con-[b] sisting of iron, phosphorus, and carbon,[b] although small discrepancies remained.
It is now established that the Milky[b] Way is far more extended and of much[b] greater mass than was hitherto thought.
And Walzer advocates as[b] the means of eliminating this tyranny[b] and of restoring genuine equality[b] "the abolition of the power of money[b] outside its sphere"
Is it not tyrannical, in Pascal's sense,[b] to insist that those who excel in "sensi-[b] tivity" or "the ability to express[b](65) compassion" merit equal wealth with[b] those who excel in qualities (such as[b] "the capacity for hard work") essential[b] in producing wealth?
Yet Waizer's[b] argument, however deficient, does[b](70) point to one of the most serious weak-[b] nesses of capitalism-namely, that it[b] brings to predominant positions in a[b] society people who, no matter how[b] legitimately they have earned their[b](75) material rewards, often lack those[b] other qualities that evoke affection[b] or admiration.
The[b] appreciation of traditional oral[b] American Indian literature has been[b] limited, hampered by poor translations[b](10) and by the difficulty, even in the rare[b] culturally sensitive and aesthetically[b] satisfying translation, of completely[b] conveying the original's verse[b] structure, tone, and syntax.
Mores,[b] which embodied each culture's ideal[b] principles for governing every citizen,[b](15) were developed in the belief that the[b] foundation of a community lies in the[b] cultivation of individual powers to be[b] placed in service to the community.
Only in the case of[b] the February Revolution do we lack[b] a useful description of participants[b] that might characterize it in the[b](20) light of what social history has[b] taught us about the process of revolu-[b] tionary mobilization.
Anthropologists[b] and others are on much firmer ground[b](15) when they attempt to describe the[b] cultural norms for a small homogeneous[b] tribe or village than when they[b] undertake the formidable task of[b] discovering the norms that exist in a[b](20) complex modern nation state composed[b] of many disparate groups.
It has[b] thus generally been by way of the[b] emphasis on oral literary creativity[b](10) that these Chicano writers, whose[b] English language works are sometimes[b] uninspired, developed the powerful and[b] arresting language that characterized[b] their Spanish-language works.
