A:CS at UIUC is very nice to Chinese.This year we have altogether 8 new comers that are from Mainland China, 4 of them are like me, transfer. If you feel you are strong enough for this great department, I would definitely encourage you to apply. What you lose is a little bit money, but you may gain a wonderful career. You won't regret.
3.which factor is the most important to successful application?
A: Applicants can be viewed as multi-dimensional objects. The goal for university is try to classify these high-dimensional objects into different categories. In China, we crop lots of good dimensions, and just use one, which is the exam score. In US, they also crop many dimensions, but still consider much more than we Chinese Universities do. The remaining dimensions I can think of are: GPA, Publication, GRE, TOEFL, TSE, School reputation, Recommendation letter, Personal Statement. They all are important. If you are from Tsinghua or PKU, and have a high GPA, maybe that is enough for joining a top 20 university. Otherwise, there is one saying from me:
Think before you want to join a top university 2 questions.
1.Are you top one in your department?
2.Do you have good publication in an international conference or workshop, or a journal?
If your answers to these two questions are all "NO", then probably you will have trouble to get into a top university. Last year, my answers are "NO", "NO", so I got rejected. This year, my answers are "NO", "YES", so I got accepted.
4.请问你申请的时候是申博士吗？那中途transfer怎么转？容易吗？
A: Transfer is not easy, but still possible.
5.研究生毕业后申请时GRE是不是真的很重要，我大三时考的，只有420的verbal，有些人说没关系，有些人说一定要重考，所以很矛盾
A: i can tell you UIUC don't care GRE much, if you did top level research and show potential, you will have good chance

A:as far as i know, no. But in same special cases, maybe yes

A:i think there is no least GPA, higher the better. I would say, maybe above 3.5 for CS
8.I find that UIUC requires TSE score for admission. Is it possible to apply without tse and take tse later if admitted?
A:I didn't have a TSE when I made the application

A:I think TA is very good. Better than Fellow in some sense, because fellow don't get the wonderful opportunity to teach. The most exciting thing for a TA is leading discuss sections, which means you give a 50mins talk to undergraduates. This is very fun, and very challenging. I tried hard and did a good job as a TA. I feel my English and presentation skills get significantly improved. Being a TA, you also get the chance to refresh your minds. Like you teach Java, then you will know Java very well. This is another good thing. So if you lack these, be a TA and it will pave your way. Normally it is not tough, I work approximately <10hrs each week for my TA job.

A: i don't know, i think physics is very nice, try to do some top research, and you will not be hotly hunted for.

A:The reputation of ZJU is becoming better and better. Mainly because lots of ZJUers are doing a good job. Maybe it is hard to get into top universities such as MIT, Stanford, but definitely other universities want top students from ZJU.My feeling is that these are friendly-to-Zju universities(CS): CMU, UIUC, UW, OSU, UCDavis, UCSB, SUNYSB, UVA, UMBC.You should not just try those. Otherwise, we ZJUers only get into those universities and don't have a chance to attract other universities.

A:the ealier the better, i would say. but before you contact with profs, make sure you want join him, otherwise, you are wasting other ppl's time.

A:UBC is very nice, U of T is hard to get in, but excellent, Alberta is another one, MCgilll is also not bad. of course, waterloo, but it is hard

A:no necessarily, but the more the better .generally, for MS, if you don't have good research, you don't have as good chance as under
26.Should I first mail my application package before "Tao Ci"?
A:either way is ok, "Tao Ci" sometimes is a bad thing if you mis-use it
27. 如果我看重一个教授，他不是计算机系的，但是UIUC里面有很多跨学科联合的PROJECT，一般CS学生申请是不是很困难，就像出国换专业一样？
A:yea, there is a beckman center, which does inter-discipline work. it will be harder, but still possible

A:no, like UCSB don't care about G/T actually
29.能不能问一个比较尴尬的问题？一开始你有否申请过uiuc，为什么最先他们没有收你，而后来要你了？有没有什么经验？
A:I did apply to UIUC last year. I was on the waiting list, but was not lucky enough to get in last year.I joined UCSB, and did a good job there. I am also lucky that my paper got published right before UIUC made the final decision this year.And I have good connection with the people here at UIUC. They helped me in one way or another. So finally I am here at this wonderful place, CORNS, CORNS, AND CORNS.
30.一般申请多少名左右的学校比较适合啊？
A:too general, that depends on your credential, if you are top 1 in Tsinghua, go for top 10

A:I followed my interest(DB related research, such as Data Mining, Information Retrieval) and kept on trying, finally my efforts paid off. I don't have any regrets. Maybe one, I sent a letter to a UW prof, which puts UC-Berkeley in the title.
32.if I apply one year after graduating from University, will there be any difference?
A:maybe no big difference, it won't hurt you that much, but be careful about this one year, if you say you are just hanging out with girls, that is not good.

A:that will be useful, but maybe not very. i actually just did one for my friend, hopefully it will help .
35.是不是人在加州transfer加州的学校也容易一些？那我是不是应该在有名校的地方多申请一些保底学校？
A:Naturally yes. Say you are in UCSB, you may easily pay a visit to UCLA and won some professor there. But I don't really agree with the point to apply to a university where there are other good ones. Joining a university is a serious commitment. I didn't follow my commitment to finish a PhD in UCSB.

A:yes, i think that is true, CA is have big financial problems.

A:that depends on who wrote the letter, if he is a super star, that will of coz be of GREAT help. otherwise, if you just ask a prof in China, that probably won't be very useful.

A:that will help more, but still not a lot
50.现在CS很难出去了吗
A:not very hard, but not easy, be prepard, I had some very good classmates who failed, so be prepared mentally, there is no grarantee

A:i think there are good chances for DB ppl, I am a good example
52. 那个时候你择校的时候有考虑过毕业后工作的问题么？
A:Good question. sure, it is becoz of my career goal that I joined UIUC,I decided to join academia, or at least a research lab after my graduation, and a GOOD university will help on that.if I just want to get a job, I will just do a MS, and earn some money afterward, which is not I want.

A:sure, they are chances, but might be hard, becoz natually , low ranking universities are poor, and thus can NOT give many assistantshoips

A: good question. :)
We have just moved into a very nice building (80million$). This means UIUC is paying ATTENTION to CS department. One exciting thing is that this year, we got 10 new faculty, like David (a famous Computer Vision guy). And we ended up with enrolling 85 PhD students (with an expectation of 60). These are very sound signs of the booming of our department. There are definitely chances for new comers, but remind you that the candidate pool is very high quality. More than half of the new students I know already have publications, or they rank high from the top universities in China, such as PKU, ZJU.

A:Generally speaking, Chinese Professors pay more attention to Chinese applicants, simply because they know better. But it is still your credential that decides where you can get an offer or not. One good thing working with Chinese is that we all are diligent, hard working, and tolerant. But there are bad things. There are not as many opportunities to practice English as working with Americans. (English is very important) Also, working with foreigners, you get chance to learn other ways of thinking, whereas Chinese normally thinks the same. |
