美国研究生院理工科申请评论(2)

下面在想一些比较琐碎的,想到哪说到哪把。

一、申请的个人理由

里面都要阐述为什么要申请这个学校,研究兴趣的相符应该是要重点阐述的。除此之外,如果有比较个人化的理由一定要说出来。比如:配偶(或男/女朋友)在你们学校,或在同一个城市,这个对多美国人来说是非常让然信服的理由。

二、学校参观

我觉得参观学校不但能使申请的同学真正的了解这个学校,而且提供面对面和教授陶瓷的机会,所得到的信息写在PS里面会引起人的注意的。即使在PS里面只是提到:我对你们学校真的很感兴趣,为了验证我的看法,我参观了你们学校,和某某教授做了交流,碰上了某某同学,参观了图书馆,我得出的结论就是,我真的想在你们学校度过以后的几年。对在大陆申请的同学,这个难度很大。但如果有条件,有可能,口语又比较过关,参观自己想去得学校,参观时和尽可能的多的人交流,再在把这些事实写到PS里面,会大大提高成功的机会。

三、英语问题

到底英文应该流畅到什么程度呢?我见过国内一些出国公司给申请人写的PS, 的确是妙笔生花,但有一种过于华丽不实的的感觉。其实用平实,流畅的语言把要说的表达出来就够了。有一些错误,表达不地道都在所难免,不要非常晦涩,难懂,语法错误满天就行了。

四、诚信

我在申请的时候也总有一种冲动,总想刻意的拔高自己在某方面的成绩。其实,从不同的角度,有选择的叙述以有的事实完全无可厚非,但撒谎就不好了。这其中的界限很难区分。我区分的定义是,撒谎是说不存在的事实。比如把全国竞赛第一百名说成第一。但可以换一个角度,说在你们的赛区排第一(如果这是事实的话),而不提全国的排名。上帝最终会奖赏那些诚信的人。

五、来美国后

这点已经和申请无关了,不感兴趣的同学可以打住了。不过写到这里了,就想多说一些,希望斑竹和同学们能谅解我的离题。

几乎每一个学校都有一个委员会叫Academic Misconduct Committee, 学生犯了错通常被这个委员会进行听证,如果被认为是事实,就进行相应的处理。我曾经在我们学校的这个委员会帮忙。在我接触的案例中,大约10%的涉及的我们中国的同学。我刚来美国时,因为感觉作业非常多,经常想抄别的同学的,或随便写写中间过程,然后抄别人的答案,或者把往年的作业拿来抄,现在想想真是直出冷汗。我提醒同学们,做作业时,互相商量可以,千万不要出现以下的情况:一、中间过程不对,答案却对了。二,两个人的犯的错误一模一样。三、自己的解答和去年的某同学的答案一模一样。四、整段话和网上的某一段话一模一样。也不要把自己的作业完全交给另一个人去抄。

我知道看着篇文章的同学百分之九十九都是无神论者,我在中国的时候也是。同学们到美国来以后,不可避免的要接触教堂的,我的观点

六、继续讨论

Statement of Purpose

My primary interest of study within language technologies involves speech synthesis and its applications. By pursuing a Ph.D., I wish to become a top-notch researcher dedicated to bringing computer-synthesized speech to not only the research community but also the end users. To achieve this objective, I plan to proceed in two steps in my Ph.D. program. First, I want to broaden my background in speech synthesis. Second, I plan to gain first-hand experience in speech synthesis applications and deployment.

My motivation for applying to XXXX goes beyond the fact that XXXX has a prestigious academic reputation and a world-class faculty. In fact, after tracking the research progress  within your department, reading publications by your researchers, and consulting with Professor XXXX, I am impressed by your ability to convert language and speech theories to practical applications. The resources and projects within your department will help me achieve my objectives in pursuing a Ph.D. in the following manners.

First, the XXXX and XXXX project will provide me with an opportunity to broaden my background in speech synthesis. Based on the XXXX’s system, the project XXXX makes it possible for interested parties to systemically build a new voice from text. Currently focusing on a very specific topic in articulatory speech synthesis, I will benefit from experiencing all phases of building a voice from text in this project, including text analysis, linguistic analysis, and waveform generation. I will also learn from the strategies and approaches for developing a small and fast run-time engine in the project XXXX.

Second, some past and ongoing projects such as XXXX will supply me with successful examples of speech synthesis deployment. In addition, I will have an opportunity to address some further questions in these projects. For example, in the XXXX project ……..

Third, I will have an opportunity to conduct pilot research on speech synthesis applications in some new projects. Professor XXXX is starting a project on ….. By participating in this project or other similar projects, I will gain an insight into innovative ways of applying speech synthesis.

These projects and resources will provide me a strong support to achieve my objectives in a Ph.D. program. And my past academic and research experience described as below has prepared me to make the most out of these resources.

My research at my university involved….. I first obtained and improved a speech synthesizer which exploits a two-mass model to simulate the voice source and Mermelstein’s model to simulate the vocal tract. Then I made several assumptions and simplifications to narrow down my research. First, ….. Second,……. Third, ….. The acoustic-to-articulatory transformation was then conducted in two steps.

Prior to this experience, I worked at XXXX, where I participated in a national research project and conducted research on….. I, along with a research scientist, proposed a new model called ….., derived its mathematical description, and implemented its supervised learning algorithm. I also got myself involved in some speech projects in which I extracted speech features and evaluated their weights on speech recognition.

After describing my past research experience, I want to address several issues that the admissions committee might concern. Language barriers were the reason that my first-quarter grades at my university were not strong. After my first quarter, I overcame these hurdles and …. Preoccupied by ….., I decided not to take the GRE Subject Test. However, I did take many classes in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at my university, which further strengthened my background and prepared me to join and contribute to your program.
